Welcome to the A-Z challenge, where we'll be blogging our way through the alphabet throughout the month of April. My theme will be places--it may be a specific place, a state, or a country. A=America's Stonehenge
Our first stop on the tour bus is
America's Stonehenge in my beautiful state of New Hampshire in Salem. I chose this place because it's a setting I used as a scene in my newly released book,
Deadly Kisses.
America's Stonehenge was previously called Mystery Hill, with good reason, because no one knows for sure who built this early civilization. Perhaps it was Native Americans, or people even earlier. By using carbon dating, it could even be the oldest man-made construction in the U.S.
What I find fascinating is that the site is an accurate astronomical calendar. Stone walls line the site. Many stones have carvings etched into them. There are events held for the equinox, and solstices.
Some say that America's Stonehenge is haunted, and there are regular ghost hunts that take place there. How's that for spooky?
If the history doesn't interest you. This site is privately owned, and there is a herd of alpacas that live there. Just watch out because they spit. I know this because one of them did it to me. Other fun things--snowshoeing in the winter, and scenic hikes.
I've been there a couple of times for book research. The hike to the site is beautiful and weaves through the forest, and old stone walls to the main site, where you can walk through the many caverns.
