A is for America's Stonehenge and Arlee Bird

Welcome to the A-Z challenge, where we'll be blogging our way through the alphabet throughout the month of  April. My theme will be places--it may be a specific place, a state, or a country. It will be whatever I think is spooky, beautiful, or intriguing. I'll be rating each stop on the way with these factors, with 5 being the highest score, and 1 being the lowest score. I hope it will inspire any writers or travelers out there in Bloggerland. So, thanks for stopping by, and enjoy!

 A=America's Stonehenge

Our first stop on the tour bus is America's Stonehenge in my beautiful state of New Hampshire in Salem. I chose this place because it's a setting I used as a scene in my newly released book, Deadly Kisses.

America's Stonehenge was previously called Mystery Hill, with good reason, because no one knows for sure who built this early civilization. Perhaps it was Native Americans, or people even earlier. By using carbon dating, it could even be the oldest man-made construction in the U.S.

What I find fascinating is that the site is an accurate astronomical calendar. Stone walls line the site. Many stones have carvings etched into them. There are events held for the equinox, and solstices.

Some say that America's Stonehenge is haunted, and there are regular ghost hunts that take place there. How's that for spooky?

If the history doesn't interest you. This site is privately owned, and there is a herd of alpacas that live there. Just watch out because they spit. I know this because one of them did it to me. Other fun things--snowshoeing in the winter, and scenic hikes.

I've been there a couple of times for book research. The hike to the site is beautiful and weaves through the forest, and old stone walls to the main site, where you can walk through the many caverns.

Spook index: 3
Intrigue index: 5
Beauty index: 4

wow! I had no idea that place even existed! We are planning to take our kids out "on the road" sometime within the next year or so-- this will have to be a stop on our journey! How cool! I'm excited to see all the places on your list! WooooOhoooo!

I've heard references to the place but never really went to far to see more about it. I can see why there is such intrigue though. Thank you for sharing.

Yay! Super awesome. That makes me want to get out a hike...except there's nowhere really "hike" worthy around here, and the bugs... *shudders* Beautiful pictures--and what a great choice for a setting! I was spotting the similarities while I read. =)

Always great to see settings from books, even if the story isn't familiar to me yet. As a huge history fan, this is right up my alley. Fantastic pictures, too.

Oh, wow! That sounds just awesome! I can definitely see why such a place would inspire a story or two. I had no clue we had a Stonehenge of sorts.

That is cool. My hubby and I want to visit the East coast and see all the historic places one day. I'll have to try to remember this and maybe we'll get a chance to see it ourselves.
